NRDC, the powerful national environmental organization, is coming to the aid of our environment here in the inland northwest. I received an “emergency dispatch” from them yesterday explaining the extremely harmful consequences of the proposed Rock Creek mine in northwest Montana.
The mine will destroy the very last habitat of an endangered bear population – just for the profits of a single corporation.
It is interesting that the NRDC focus is on the wildlife habitat issue. Local concerns have been focused more on the long term effects on the watershed. Based on the well documented mining effects on Lake Coeur d’Alene, we know that the huge stockpiles of mine tailings will leach extremely harmful compounds into the Clark Fork River and then into our beautiful Lake Pend Oreille.
It’s sad that the greed of the Sterling Mining Company can destroy forever one of the last homes for our grizzly bear population…and equally sad that our almost pristine waters may be polluted beyond regeneration.
