I’ve recently received new catalogs from manufacturers and suppliers with new 2009 pricing. The news is not good…for the highest volume category – Water Gardening – pricing has increased 17% for larger items! In concert with increasing shipping costs, this is disheartening for both the store owner (me) and the potential customer.
How in the world can we remain competitive, cover overhead and still end up with a modest margin?
I refuse to carry the lower end lines of product…just too many callbacks, returns and disgruntled customers. I wouldn’t have these products in my landscape, so I can’t feel good about sending them to someone else’s yard.
So I will redo all pricing in this and other categories to reflect at least part of my growing costs. It’s very possible that reduced sales will result this year, even if profit margin is cut to the bare bone.
