The previous version of The Clearwater Garden Journal had become difficult to manage: referral and comment spam was a daily problem…a very distasteful problem!
I finally took the time to research and implement a new blog tool (new to me) named WordPress. It has better features for blocking spam comments. With a bit of re-formatting I was able to import all previous posts into the new system. So far, spam has been non-existant. Knock on wood.

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger declared war on global warming by imposing bold new greenhouse gas restrictions on the most populous US state.
I certainly can’t agree with him on many other issues, but I have to say ‘Good job, Arnold!‘

This is my busiest time of year for design and web store sales, so I’m often frustrated that I can’t get outside more often to work in and enjoy our own gardens.
The bulbs below are a surprisingly compatible mix of colors. Our local deer herd did not bother this bed last spring, but this year, when the tulips were just a few inches tall, I found them one morning nibbled to about one inch. I placed 18 deer repellent sticks throughout the bed, and had no further problems.
Even a quick ramble around the yard daily can be extremely important! My lack of attention could have resulted in no bloom and perhaps irreparable damage to the plants.
We need to teach our deer herd about “deer resistant” plants…they nibbled on the daffodils also!

The pathway is dug three shovel widths and the soil is moved to the new bed, on the right here. This almost doubles the topsoil depth in the beds.

Using the steel garden rake, soil is smoothed and the bed is created.

Amendments are spread along the two rows of the bed - compost, organic fertilizer and dolomite lime.

Amendments are throughly hoed to a depth of 4-6 inches. The bed is ready to plant.

The garlic was planted last fall. Asparagus is planted in the trench to the left. The deer fence is eight foot vinyl - at the bottom is four inches of wood chips over landscape fabric…there will be few weeds to deal with along this fenceline.

I laid out planting spots 15′ apart for three semi-dwarf apple trees. Two Honey Crisp and one Stark Jon-a-Red. Instead of enriching the planting hole with amendments, I cultivated a larger area about the size of the future basin.

After breaking up the soil to about a foot deep, I applied dolomite lime (our soil is on the acid side), Milorganite, bone meal and a commercial compost. I hoed these amendments into the top 6″-8″.

A long wet spell is predicted, so after preparing the areas, I covered them with plastic. I want loose soil to plant in…the trees should arrive around April 8.

After two and a half months of zero precipitation, the last few days have seen several snows, at times heavy.
Certainly too little too late to remedy the extremely light mountain snowpack - we still expect a very dry summer.

This is an excellent description of how a tree heals itself, and the importance of proper saw cuts.
Thanks to the Garden’s Gift blog for pointing this out.
