A Winter to Remember!

Path to Sauna

Removing 3-4′ from the top of this berm to make room for more blown snow.

This little tractor and snowblower has saved us countless hours and great expense.
Our front walk.

Here’s a quick video of our pond this winter. If you turn up your sound, you can hear the falls.

December was a vigorous workout! Hopefully January will continue to keep me in shape with regular snowfall. Though Cindy has to listen to sore-muscle complaints from this sixty-something body, I do welcome the exercise…certainly not much gardening to do!

March often delivers disappointment. After the first “real” winter we’ve had in several years, we were hoping for an early spring. No such luck! Much of the nation seems to have similar troubles, so at least we’re not alone. The weeping elm below doesn’t seem to mind carrying an extra load.

This Marsh Marigold (Caltha Palustris) started blooming even before any other aquatic plants started growing. It certainly provides cheerful color to an otherwise drab early spring landscape. It will bloom throughout our spring and then again when cool fall weather arrives. It has performed so well since planting last spring, I’ve purchased and planted four more. Next year we’ll have quite an early spring display.

Now I can believe in Spring. Even Isabel, the large Koi, has emerged from the fish cave to browse on the algae.
The pond has remained fairly clear and clean throughout winter. We will simply draw down the water a bit, clean the little amount of algae and debris with the muck vac, hose off the filter media, add dechlorinator and fill. Also will use a product called Stress Coat to ensure fish health. All in all, it really pays to keep the pond clean throughout the year…less stress on the fish and the fish keeper.

Maybe not always, but this 6″+ of new snow is pretty depressing in March, especially after a few days of upper 40 deg. temps. The fish had even come out to say hello a couple days in a row.
