20 degrees this morning! Even the garlic, which has been up for weeks, is droopy, as are all the bulbs in the landscape. I’ll be curious to see how the newly sprouted asparagus holds up to such cold. There are three or four shoots poking through already.
The asparagus crowns arrived today. I soaked them in water for an hour and then planted them 10″ apart on the hill of loose, amended soil at the bottom of the trench. I played hookey from design work yesterday to take advantage of a brief dry spell. We had ordered 50 crowns of Jersey Giant Asparagus and the bed had to be prepared thoroughly. A well prepared and tended asparagus bed can produce for twenty years, so I want to do it just right.

The planting of greens started to sprout in four days. Even after all these years of gardening, I’m still amazed to watch this process. How can a tiny, seemingly inert seed contain all the energy, food and information necessary for the creation of a whole plant? Mind boggling!
