A small amount of string algae is normal and indicates a healthy ecosystem. But when it gets out of hand, string algae can really become a mess and increase pond maintenance greatly. Used regularly, Barley Straw Pellets help to control the algae...here's how:

As barley straw decomposes in water, it releases lignins, which oxidize to humic acids in the presence of oxygen. If sunlight then shines on the humic substances, hydrogen peroxide is formed. The peroxides in turn inhibit the growth of algae. They have no effect on existing algae. Barley straw pellets release a constant supply of low levels of hydrogen peroxide which is safe and effective.

Oxygen must be in high enough levels to create the inhibitors, so a good place to add the pellets is near your waterfall, in full sun .

Temperature is also a factor. Barley straw can take one to three months to be effective - but these barley pellets are much faster, starting to work almost immediately.

Start using Barley Straw Pellets anytime and apply every six weeks through fall, when algae growth can be severe. We've found this product to be most effective when applied in small, partial doses over a 7-10 period.
