Portfolio: IdahoRecently Completed Local Design Projects: Matteucci Residence - Dover Bay, Idaho Past Projects This project east of Sandpoint was commissioned by an avid gardener and feng shui practitioner. One design concern was to establish a "grand entrance" to the front door. There is a small drive, but little parking space, to the left of the photo; greater parking area and a more inviting entry were desired. The existing lower drive (shown) was removed in favor of a new walkway and planting beds. ![]() Several versions of the new entry were considered, resulting in the following plan with generous parking area, a very inviting, colorful walk to a paver stairway that leads up to a small patio, and a wooden stairway up to the deck and front door. An additional walk directs to the small apartment under the deck. ![]() Hardscape Plan ![]() After the hardscape was installed, the site was graded, planted and mulched. The owners wanted lots of perennials, and despite being planted late in the season, many responded with immediate bloom.
The owners of this beautiful site on Lake Pend Oreille in north Idaho have built much of their home themselves, and are also installing the entire landscape, including retaining walls and pathways. This hillside had been seeded to grass, but was too steep for safe, efficient mowing. Photo images were created to depict the mature look of the proposed landscape: ![]()
![]() Since this is such a large, visually important area, we used as many large planting sizes as possible. Still, it will take several years before the landscape starts filling in. The owners are delighted with the outcome. Landscape installation was provided by Denny Shellhorn of Mountain Springs Nursery. ![]() ![]()
The project below is a fairly small yard, which previously had been filled with a very bumpy lawn and poorly constructed planting beds. The new owners of the property established a bed and breakfast in the historic home and then wanted to create a retreat for visitors (and themselves) in the back. Designing for small spaces brings its own set of design challenges - a place for everything and everything in its place. We were able to work together through several revisions to create a pleasing composition.
