Deer Resistant Plant Lists

The following lists were compiled mostly from a pamphlet produced by a group of Master Gardeners in Westchester County, in upstate New York.

Be careful using this list. Hungry deer will eat anything (except perhaps barberry!), unless the plants or entire area is protected by a repellant. Each year seems to be a bit different...for example, we found them munching on purple coneflower (Echinacea) for the first time ever this year.

Note that trees will become deer resistant after growth exceeds browsing height (3' - 5')...a temporary fence around young trees, though unsightly, may be necessary for several years.

Here in north Idaho's deer heaven, we use garlic and hot pepper units that clip to our plants and remain effective for six to eight months - no messy sprays, no re-application after every rain or new growth. This is by far the best solution to the deer problem! (except, of course, an eight foot tall fence around the entire property) Learn more about this, and other natural pest controls,
at The Landscape Market.
